PUL EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER JOURNALISTS’ SAFETY IN NIMBA COUNTY

Date:

MONROVIA – The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) expresses its concern regarding recent developments in Nimba County, where 14 of its members have encountered potential risks linked to allegations of slander and libel against them.

In a press release issued today, the PUL highlights that 14 journalists from various parts of the county find themselves in a challenging situation. These journalists from Nimba County have been accused by Mr. Printis Domah and Bob Yeenuah Kartoe, both affiliated with the Unity Party, of holding a clandestine meeting with Monrovia City Mayor, Jefferson Tamba Koijee. These allegations have understandably left the journalists concerned for their safety.

Furthermore, it has been alleged that these journalists received a significant sum of money, totaling US$25,000.00, with an initial payment of US$10,000.00, from the Secretary General of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). Additionally, it is claimed that these reporters have been involved in a deliberate campaign to undermine the political strategies of the Unity Party by disseminating propaganda in favor of the ruling CDC through their respective radio stations.

The Press Union of Liberia underscores that, especially during a critical election period such as the upcoming October 10 polls, journalists must be allowed to work freely without perceived threats from political figures. Nimba County, should not be an exception to this call, the Union says.

Furthermore, the PUL calls upon both the CDC and the Unity Party to ensure that all journalists across Liberia are free to work and cover their rallies without fear or favor. It is important to remember that these journalists are also Liberians, and they play a vital role in the democratic process.

The Press Union of Liberia remains dedicated to safeguarding the rights and safety of journalists throughout the country. We appeal for a swift resolution of this matter to guarantee the protection of our dedicated members in Nimba County.
