HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ENDORSES REPORT ON BEA MOUNTAIN SITUATION, CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND JUSTICE

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Plenary of the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, has officially endorsed the final report on the situation at Bea Mountain. The report highlights key recommendations aimed at addressing the violations committed by Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC) and ensuring accountability for the loss of Liberian lives.

One of the primary recommendations outlined in the report is the summoning of the Chief Executive Officer and top managers of BMMC by the Office of the Chief Clerk. This summons is intended to hold them accountable for violating agreements with the Government of Liberia, which ultimately resulted in the tragic loss of Liberian lives.

In addition, the House of Representatives has urged the Liberia National Police to identify and apprehend the officers responsible for the fatal shootings at the Kinjor protest site. By swiftly arresting and prosecuting the individuals involved, the government aims to demonstrate its commitment to justice and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

To restore community confidence and foster accountability, the House of Representatives has called for the resignation or transfer of the Country Manager of BMMC. This step is seen as crucial in rebuilding trust between the company and the affected communities.

Recognizing the importance of empowering local contractors, the House of Representatives has recommended enlisting qualified longtime contractors as employees within BMMC. This move aims to provide employment opportunities and promote economic growth within the region.

Furthermore, the House of Representatives has emphasized the need for transparency in employment practices at BMMC. As part of this effort, BMMC will be required to submit employment records of top Liberian employees and undergo an employee audit conducted by the Ministry of Labor.

To address the health concerns of the community, the House of Representatives has mandated BMMC to procure ambulances, upgrade health facilities, and provide necessary medical supplies. These measures are intended to improve healthcare services and ensure the well-being of the local population.

Lastly, the House of Representatives has proposed imposing fines on BMMC for violations related to employment and permits. By holding the company accountable through financial penalties, the government aims to deter future violations and promote adherence to regulations.

The endorsement of the final report by the House of Representatives reflects the commitment of the Liberian government to address the issues surrounding the Bea Mountain situation. It sends a strong message that violations will not be tolerated, and steps will be taken to ensure justice, accountability, and the well-being of the affected communities.
