SENATOR AMARA KONNEH ADVOCATES FOR TRANSPARENCY AND REFORM IN GOVERNANCE AND ELECTRICITY SECTOR

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Former Finance Minister and current Gbarpolu County Senator Amara Konneh took to his Facebook page on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, to emphasize the power of knowledge and information. He asserted that “secrecy” in governance is incompatible with democratic principles, particularly in this era of information and knowledge.

Today’s “House of Elders” session was largely productive, with discussions focusing on the need for reforms in the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC). Despite the setback in advocating for reforms at LEC and LERC, Senator Konneh acknowledged the challenges of pushing for change in entrenched institutions where the prevailing sentiment often favors maintaining the status quo.

Senator Konneh reaffirmed his commitment to accelerate advocacy efforts for stringent oversight of the electricity sector through constituency action. The objective is to facilitate a three-shift (24-hour) economy that will create employment opportunities for unemployed university graduates and other young people by ensuring cheap and stable electricity.

While today’s session may not have yielded the desired outcomes, Senator Konneh remains optimistic about the potential for change. He emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and openness in governance to foster trust and promote democratic values.

Stay tuned for more updates on the advocacy efforts and progress in the electricity sector reform in the coming month, the Gbarpolu County Senator concluded.
