BY-ELECTIONS IN NIMBA AND GRAND GEDEH DRAW VOTER INTEREST WITH 19 CANDIDATES IN THE RACE

Date:

LIBERIA – As voting begins today in the by-elections in Nimba and Grand Gedeh, it has garnered significant attention, with 19 candidates competing for crucial Senatorial and Representative positions.

On Saturday, April 20, National Elections Commission (NEC) Chairperson Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah issued a statement marking the conclusion of the 2024 Senatorial By-Election in Nimba County and District 1 Representative By-Election in Grand Gedeh County. The statement specifically encourages voters to participate in the election today, April 23, 2024.

In Nimba, a quartet of Senatorial hopefuls is in the race to succeed Jeremiah Koung, who ascended to the Vice Presidency alongside Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party in 2023. The contenders are Nya Twayen from the Unity Party, Samuel Kogar of the People’s Unification Party, former Nimba Senator Thomas Gruppe, and Armstrong Gobac Selekpoh representing the Liberia National Union.

Meanwhile, the Grand Gedeh District #1 Representative by-election has attracted 15 candidates eager to secure the open seat.

According to the National Elections Commission, a total of 413,050 ballot papers have been printed for the Nimba Senatorial by-election, with an additional 26,400 earmarked for the Grand Gedeh District #1 Representative by-election.

The Commission’s voter registration data reveals that 327,661 citizens are registered to vote in these by-elections. Nimba boasts 307,254 eligible voters, while Grand Gedeh has 20,407 registered voters for the District #1 Representative by-election.

As both Nimba and Grand Gedeh gear up for competitive electoral contests, these by-elections are poised to be crucial events in shaping Liberia’s political future.
