SENATORS CALL FOR PROBE INTO ALLEGED ILLICIT MINING ACTIVITIES IN GBARPOLU COUNTY

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – On Thursday, April 25th, two Senators Amara Konneh and Botoe Kanneh from Gbarpolu County presented a compelling case on the Senate floor, urging their fellow senators to initiate an immediate investigation into allegations surrounding Liberia’s economic growth and illicit mining practices in Gbarpolu County.

According to reports from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Liberian economy witnessed a growth of approximately 4% in 2023. This growth was primarily attributed to advancements in mining and construction sectors on the supply side, coupled with increased infrastructure spending on the demand side.

However, Senator Konneh raised concerns about the disparity in benefiting from this reported growth, particularly highlighting the situation in Gbarpolu County. Despite being mineral-rich, the county has not seen the economic benefits one might expect from the reported growth in the mining sector.

The senators pointed fingers at Mr. Gao Feng, commonly known as Barry, who holds the unofficial title of “the Minister of Mines and Energy.” Allegedly, Mr. Feng is using Liberian proxies to operate an illicit mining empire in various parts of Gbarpolu County, including Belle Yalla, Henry Town, Monakorlleh, and parts of Gbarma District.

The operations reportedly involve the use of at least 20 excavators and 12 washing plants for extracting gold and diamonds. These activities have raised environmental concerns, including deforestation, pollution of water sources, and potential tax evasion.

Senator Konneh emphasized the urgency of investigating these allegations to protect the interests of Gbarpolu County and ensure transparency and accountability in the mining sector. The senators called for a thorough investigation to determine the extent of illicit mining activities, assess environmental impacts, and evaluate tax compliance.

The senators’ communication to their colleagues serves as a plea for action to safeguard Gbarpolu County’s resources and ensure that its residents benefit from the natural wealth of the region. They are committed to uncovering the truth behind these allegations and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.

As the Senate considers launching an investigation into these serious allegations, the focus remains on promoting responsible mining practices, protecting the environment, and ensuring that the economic benefits of Liberia’s natural resources are shared equitably among its citizens.
