SENATOR DILLON CRITICIZES PRESIDENT BOAKAI FOR FAILURE TO PUBLISH ASSETS

Date:

MONROVIA – Montserrado County Senator, Abraham Darius Dillon, has expressed disappointment over President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s failure to publish his assets. Senator Dillon, speaking on the matter on Spoon Talk today, stated, “It’s very disappointing that the President Joseph Boakai has not published his assets.”

Senator Dillon highlighted that during the 2023 presidential election campaign across Montserrado County, he and President Boakai committed to the people to declare their assets, regardless of the law.

Senator Dillon emphasized his own commitment to transparency, noting that he was the first public official to declare his assets, especially under the previous government, and published them outside the law because he has nothing to hide. He contrasted this with President Boakai, stating that their campaign, under the banner of the “rescue mission,” promised a different approach.

On Thursday, February 8th, 2024, President Boakai declared his assets at the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), in accordance with the Code of Conduct for public officials, which mandates all public officials to declare their assets upon taking office.

The declaration was also a fulfillment of President Boakai’s previous promise to do so. He personally handed over the appropriate documents containing his assets to the Officer-in-Charge of Assets Declaration, Patricia Banaba.

“We told the Liberian people that transparency and accountability would be the foundation of our government. We have to be honest with ourselves so that the future can judge us based on what we do today,” President Boakai said.

He further indicated that declaring his assets fulfills a commitment he made and stated that his government would implement what they have promised the Liberian people. “My government will implement the will of the Liberian people,” he emphasized.

However, Senator Dillon urged President Boakai to fulfill his commitment to transparency, stating, “Whether there’s a law or not, we will display our assets with sincerity.” Senator Dillon’s remarks underscore the importance of transparency and accountability in public office, calling on leaders to lead by example in fulfilling their promises to the people.
