MONROVIA – Following their conflicting and controversial statements, can citizens, especially those from Gbarpolu County and Montserrado County, trust Amara Konneh and Abraham Darius Dillon? Currently, critics, political commentators, and ordinary citizens are heavily criticizing the two lawmakers for their disingenuous statements following the controversial Buchanan Senate retreat held in Grand Bassa County. Allegedly, an amount of $700,000 was expended on the retreat.
In response to the public outcry, Senator Dillon posted this statement on his official Facebook page: “Many folks have asked me today about some ‘$700K’ allegedly spent for and on the recent Senate Retreat in Grand Bassa County. At first, I did not want to bother to even respond, but I owe it to our people in the interest of transparency and accountability; otherwise, I would have simply ignored and moved on. It is simply hilarious that some people or any sound mind would believe that we would be soooooo insensitive, reckless and don’t-care to spend such an amount on and for a four-day retreat!! This reminds me of how some of these very people spread falsehood about a ‘Retirement Bill,’ deliberately linking me to it for all the political reasons. When the truth came to light, they ran with their tails like wet cats; some even apologized for their hasty negative comments. Regarding the Senate Retreat, no ‘$700K’ was spent as is being falsely alleged and deliberately spread around. The budget for the retreat, as far as I know, was put at $50K; yes, $50K … for four days (Thursday to Sunday) … on logistics, media, lodging, feeding, etc … for 108 persons … including Senators, staff, facilitators, security, drivers, etc. Otherwise, I would like to see any authentic financial transaction between the Senate and Finance Ministry regarding the alleged ‘$700K’ so I can join in to demand answers. Until then…”
Amara Konneh also addressed the allegations, stating: “The allegations that the Senate spent $700k of taxpayers’ money on a two-day retreat in Buchanan is inaccurate. Doing so would’ve been unconscionable. The retreat cost $50k, and all went into the Buchanan economy. The Senate will issue an official response.”
Indeed, the Senate responded through a press statement. However, the statement has been heavily criticized by Liberians, questioning the failure of the Senate leadership, Madam Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, Pro-Temp, to be transparent earlier. The release aimed to clarify the misconceptions and misrepresentations circulating in various media outlets regarding the cost and intent of the retreat. The Senate’s attempt to quell the unrest highlights the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for transparency.
According to the Senate, the retreat was attended by 108 individuals, including Senators, security personnel, drivers, support staff, protocol officials, directors of departments, the retreat secretariat, and facilitators. The stated purpose of the retreat was to set the Senate’s legislative agenda, focusing on transparency and accountability, audits of the Senate, decentralization of the budget, digitization of the Senate, and the review of Senate rules, among other objectives. The Senate’s statement emphasized that the retreat’s goals were aligned with improving governance and enhancing legislative processes.
However, this narrative did little to pacify an already agitated public. Critics argue that such objectives could have been achieved without incurring such a significant financial burden, especially given the nation’s economic challenges. Contrary to the exaggerated figures reported by some individuals and media entities, the Liberian Senate claimed that the total cost of the four-day retreat was $50,000. This assertion has been met with skepticism, as many believe the actual expenditure far exceeds this amount. The discrepancy between reported costs and public perception continues to fuel the controversy.
As the debate rages on, the trust in Konneh and Dillon has been severely impacted. The conflicting statements and the Senate’s delayed response have only added to the public’s mistrust.
