LIBERIA’S FINANCE MINISTER SAMUEL TWEAH FALLS IN TROUBLE WITH THE SENATE

Date:

The Liberian Senate has instructed its Sergeant-At-Arms to bring the living body of the Minister of Finance, Samuel Tweah before the plenary on Thursday, November 24, 2022, at 12th noon.

The Senators want to inquire from the Finance Minister why he should not be held in legislative contempt for failing to pay public service workers that include civil servants, judiciary staff legislative workers, etc.

The Finance Minister is also to answer questions about why the economy is performing so poorly.

The Liberian Government has not been able to pay public service workers for almost two months.

The plenary of the Liberian Senate took the decision, Tuesday during Session.

The majority of the Senators claimed their oversight responsibilities to monitor every ministry and agency of the Liberian Government is being undermined by the underperformance of the Finance Minister.

The decision of the Liberian Senate was triggered by a concern raised by River Gee County Sen. Jonathan Boycharles Sogbie, when he informed his colleagues of ongoing protest by prosecuting lawyers throughout the country.

The lawyers are boycotting work until their salary arrears are paid in full by the government.

As a matter of seriousness, the plenary has ordered the Sergeant-At-Arms to deliver the living body of the finance minister to the Plenary on Thursday, November 24.

In a related development, some Liberians are calling for the Immediate dismissal and prosecution of the Finance minister for alleged corruption. Minister Samuel D. Tweah is linked to unending tales of rampant corruption in the country.
