PRESIDENT WEAH ACCUSED OF CONSTITUTIONAL VIOLATION BY FAILING TO ADDRESS NATIONAL LEGISLATURE TODAY

Date:

LIBERIA – There is a political controversy regarding the failure of President George Weah to address the National Legislature today-the fourth Monday in January as per the 1986 Constitution of Liberia.

Article 58 of the Constitution of Liberia, mandates that the President, like those before him, on the fourth working Monday in January of each year, present the Legislative Program of the Administration for the ensuing session, and report on the State of the Republic, covering the economic condition of the Nation, including expenditure and income.

But today, there is no address from the President to the Legislature. The unofficial reason from the circle of the Weah Government is that because Christmas fell on the first Monday in 2023.

Some opposition folks are accusing the President of violating the Constitution by his failure to deliver his address to the legislature as required by law today. It is alleged that the president will deliver his speech this coming Monday.

However, the opposition says any address after today, will be a Constitutional violation and that some of them will boycott the process so as not to be a party to the violation.

Meanwhile, the Government has failed to issue an official position on while the President is not carrying out his Constitutional responsibility today.
