UNITY PARTY CRITICIZES PRESIDENT WEAH’S ANNUAL MESSAGE – ACCUSES ADMINISTRATION OF INCOMPETENCE…

Date:

LIBERIA – The former ruling Unity Party has criticized President Weah’s Annual Message delivered on Monday, January 30, 2023, to the National Legislature.

The UP’s spokesperson Dabah M. Varpilah addressing a conference on Tuesday said that the President has failed to deliver on his promises to fight corruption.

Madam Varpilah pointed out that the President has weakened the Liberia Anti-corruption Law, making the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission a “lame duck”.

The UP’s senior partisan also accused the Weah-led government of refusing to hold corrupt officials accountable and failing to remit Social Development Funds collected from multinational firms to the local county authorities.

She also highlighted the government’s failure to implement strong revenue measures and increase domestic resource mobilization.

“Despite the President’s promise to return 50% of real estate taxes collected to the counties, districts, and cities, there has been no evidence of this program being successfully implemented” the UP’s spokesperson alleged.

The UP response also pointed out the increase in the price of rice, despite the allocation of a rice subsidy in the fiscal year budget, and the poor economic conditions faced by the Liberian people, including the absence of drugs in public health facilities and the high cost of transportation.

In conclusion, Varpilah called on all Liberians to unite their votes and support the Unity Party’s standard bearer, Joseph N. Boakai, for a well-deserved Liberia. She emphasized the need for change in the current administration and a new leadership that is competent, sincere, and dedicated to addressing the issues faced by the people.

Madam Varpilah stated that the UP, under the leadership of Boakai, is committed to bringing about changes and ensuring that the country is on a path to progress and prosperity.

Madam Varpilah further stated that President Weah’s administration has been “incompetent” and does not deserve a second term. Credit: William Lloyd
