AT AMOS SAWYER COLLEGE, FEMALES TOP MALES – 219 TO EARN BA/BSW DEGREES…

Date:

MONROVIA – After four years of hard studies and research, 219 candidates from the Prof. Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Liberia, have been cleared by the UL Faculty Senate to earn BA and BSW degrees on May 29th commencement convocation.

The UL Faculty Senate under the chairmanship of the President of the University of Liberia, Prof. Dr. Julius Julukon Sarwolo Nelson approved the 219 candidates’ graduation after the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr Josephus Moses Gray presented the candidates to the Faculty Senate Meeting on Friday, 19 May 2023.

Prof. Gray informed the Senators that he was pleased and proud as Dean to request the 219 clearance for graduation during the University of Liberia 103rd convocation on grounds that these candidates successfully completed their required course loads including research work.

The females outpace men in the college graduation for 2021/2022 which is expected to take place on Monday,  29 May 2023.

Women have accounted for over 60 percent of the candidates for the May 29th convocation due to the noteworthy rise in women at the University

These candidates successfully completed a 4-year baccalaureate degree program in various disciplines in Social Sciences and Humanities.

Fortunately, the majority of the candidates are females. They include the four most outstanding final thesis oral defenses and presentations as well as the student who earned the high distinction for the 103rd graduating class for Amos C. Sawyer College.

The College is credited for producing a high number of female graduates every convocation. It is the largest for women in the country with the highest percentage of girls at the University of Liberia.

Too many great things are happening at the University of Liberia under the administration of the institution’s faculty-student-centered President, Prof. Dr. Julius Julukon Sarwolo Nelson, Jr.

Candidates data: 148 in Sociology, 18 in Communication and Media Studies, 14 in Social Work, 14 in Demography, 12 in Political Science, 8 in Geography, 4 in English, and 1 in History.

About 80 percent of female candidates are graduating above 2.7 GPA while 80% of male candidates are graduating below 2.5. Also, the majority of the ‘DR’, ‘I’, and ‘AB’ grades are accounted for by males in the college, perhaps, the males have been too engaged with non-academic activities such as unnecessary protection and disruptions of normal classes.

Meanwhile, the college has named its best student Undergraduate Thesis Oral Defense Winners for the 2021/2022 Academic Year.

Congratulations to the five outstanding students of the Prof. Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Liberia, for their splendid performance in this year’s final thesis oral defense and presentation.

The five winners are from the Departments of Social Work,  Geography,  English and Language Studies, and Communication and Media Studies.

However, one of the five outstanding winners will be rewarded a master’s degree studies scholarship on 29 May 2023 at UL 103rd convocation.

The fully-funded scholarship is offered by the Amos C. Sawyer Foundation to the Prof Amos C Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Liberia.

So far, 64 candidates from across six academic departments including History, Geography, English and Language Studies, Political Science, Communication and Media Studies, and Social Work participated in the three weeks standard final thesis oral defense and presentation. It is one of the major requirements to earn a BA and BSW degree from the College.

Final thesis oral defense and presentation have been dormant across the College for about 15 years, but the academic exercises have been reactivated in line with best academic practices inline with the philosophical version of the institution’s faculty-student President, Prof Dr Nelson.

Members of the Thesis Panelists are Prof. Dr. D. Elliott Wreh-Wilson, Prof. Dr Nathaniel  Gbessagee, and Cllr. Mark Bedor-Wla Freeman, Assistant Prof. Alexander O. Teaway, Chair; Mrs. Roseline Tomah-Weah, Co-chair; Mr. Roosevelt Tula, Mr. Abraham Fofana, Mr. Ernest Winderburk, and Rev. Leviticus O. Kollie. The Dean of the College, Prof. Dr Josephus M. Gray served as Ex-officio to the Committee.

So far, only two departments failed to allow their candidates to participate in the academic exercise, eventually, it is part of the curricula approved by the UL Faculty Senate.

Congrats to all the candidates, you made the College, Dean, Chairpersons, Faculty, Students, Family, and Friends proud. I AM VERY PROUD TO BE YOUR DEAN!! Press Release
