MONROVIA, OCTOBER 8, 2024 – Liberia’s Auditor General, P. Garswa Jackson, has publicly expressed appreciation to the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) for its effective communication of key findings from the General Auditing Commission’s (GAC) special audit of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) for the fiscal year 2023. In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday, October 8, Jackson praised CENTAL’s seven-minute audio summary of the report, which was delivered in “simple Liberian-English” and highlighted major audit findings.
“What was particularly impressive for me,” Jackson noted, “was that no prior discussion took place between CENTAL and our team before recording the clip, and we had to provide no post input given the concise and precise nature in which our findings and recommendations were highlighted.” The GAC’s efforts to improve clarity in audit documentation were underscored, and Jackson emphasized the innovative, comprehensive, and robust reporting mechanisms that are now part of the audit process. He also acknowledged the praise the GAC has received from development partners, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Legislature, and other stakeholders for advancing audit transparency.
CENTAL, through a video link titled “What the Auditor Say,” presented the findings from the audit covering the period of January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, offering a simplified explanation of the report to the general public. Jackson praised this initiative, which he believes demonstrates how effectively the GAC’s work can be communicated to the public without sacrificing detail or accuracy.
In response, CENTAL’s Executive Director, Anderson Miamen, thanked the Auditor General for his acknowledgment and expressed a desire for continued collaboration. “Thank you for the hard work; keep it up. We will work together to do more. Once we can, we will find innovative ways to support anti-corruption and integrity institutions like yours to deliver,” Miamen stated.
This exchange between CENTAL and the GAC highlights the ongoing efforts to promote transparency and accountability in Liberia’s governance and financial systems.
