CPJ TO RELEASE REPORT ON RISING THREATS TO PRESS FREEDOM IN ECUADOR

Date:

NEW YORK — On June 27, 2023, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will release “Ecuador on edge,” a report documenting the impact of political paralysis and spiking crime on press freedom in Ecuador.

To discuss the report’s findings, a CPJ delegation will hold a press conference with Ecuadorian press freedom group Fundamedios at 10 a.m. ECT on Tuesday, June 27, in Quito.

Political turmoil and a deepening security crisis are putting reporters and press freedom at increasing risk in Ecuador. In 2022, Fundamedios documented 356 attacks on the press, the highest number since 2018. In the first four months of 2023, the organization reported a total of 96 attacks.

The report provides a snapshot of the challenges facing journalists reporting in Ecuador amid the country’s security crisis. It includes CPJ’s recommendations to strengthen Ecuador’s press freedom commitments to ensure journalists in the country can report the news without fear of reprisal.

WHO:

Local and international media are encouraged to attend to discuss the report’s findings.

WHAT: Press conference about “Ecuador on edge,” CPJ’s report on rising threats to press freedom in Ecuador.

WHEN: June 27, 2023, 10 a.m. ECT.

WHERE: NH Collection, Luis Cordero 444, Avenida 12 de Octubre, Quito.

About the Committee to Protect Journalists
