DEBUNKING THE ARROGANCE OF JOSEPH BOAKAI’S MINISTER OF INFORMATION

Date:

A Commentary by Wondah L. Jah

In recent news, the Liberian Minister of Information, Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, launched a scathing attack on two lawmakers, Senator Edwin Snowe from Bomi County and Representative Musa Bility from Nimba County. The lawmakers had raised concerns about the government’s handling of former Police Director Patrick Sudue and Former President George’s Chief of Protocol Nora Finda Bondu by the asset recovery team. Minister Peah’s response was perceived as not only disrespectful but also ignorant of the fundamental roles of lawmakers.

Lawmakers play a crucial role in representing the interests, concerns, and needs of their constituents at the legislative level. They are tasked with creating and enacting laws that address issues affecting the community and advocating for policies that enhance the well-being of the people. Furthermore, they act as a vital link between the government and the citizens, ensuring that voices are heard, rights are safeguarded, and governance is transparent and accountable.

Minister Piah’s remarks dismissing the lawmakers’ advocacy against the government reflect arrogance and a lack of understanding of their responsibilities. His tenure as the head of the information ministry has been characterized by disaster and ineffective communication of the government’s messages, contributing to the administration’s dwindling popularity.

It is imperative for Minister Piah to reassess his approach and that of his team before criticizing others, as his confrontational behavior only serves to highlight his shortcomings.

In conclusion, Minister Piah must recognize the pivotal role lawmakers play in a democratic society and refrain from unwarranted attacks on them. Instead, he should focus on improving the communication strategies of the government to regain public trust and credibility. Failure to do so may result in further alienation and potential repercussions for both himself and the government he represents.
