An opinion by Paul M. Kanneh
As we said then and now, Generational Change was a calamity in waiting. It was carved, endorsed and orchestrated by the following groups: the educated fools, the ignorance, political demons, and corrupt officials in search of protection after government. Unless for a selfish reason, a well-seasoned and logical 12 grade graduate would not have suggested Generational Change for a country coming out of 14 years of brutal civil war, after just 12 years of intermittent political governance marred by serious malpractices. Political and democratic transitions in such society must be thoroughly thought through.
Former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai wrote ‘On a soft note, I’m here sitting home observing the “National Census Day”. We are certainly products of the choices we make. We must redeem Liberia from a laughing stock to restore respect and dignity’. If we should hold Boakai’s comment to our hearts void of politics, evidence exist that the products of Generational Change has given reasons to many to consider Liberia as laughing stock in the world such as the “Census Holiday” we are witnessing today.
How could any positive-minded person think of introducing Generational Change leadership in a country yet to find a national identity lest talk about complete national policy? The results of the leadership of President Sirleaf could not have be used to make a determination to give power to young people, most of who, prior to their leadership, knew very less or nothing about political governance. Indeed Generational Change was crafted as a tool for State’s retrogression with the so intent to protect friends and relatives who have hurt the country through their official duties.
Sadly, only few with critical minds knew that Generational Change campaign was a set up against the country, as the signs and symptoms were clearly written on the walls. Now is the time to even worry more, that an entire generation of young people have spent 5 years bragging about pettiness with nearly all the policies failing and making matter worst including a dilapidated school system and “harmonization” policy amidst tuition free policy and salary harmonization. Five years now, not a single foreign head of state has paid a working visit to Liberia besides special occasions like inauguration and Independence Day celebration.
What a shame for my generation? Every month since January 2018, the government has given reasons for people to laugh at Liberia. This is the product of the Generational Change we wholeheartedly crafted, embraced and orchestrated. Are we having any regret that our decision has not only derailed national progress but has affected our own lives, and thereby rendered our cherished citizens valueless in the eyes of foreigners?
