LIBERIAN WOMEN OF PEACE TEAR-GASSED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MEDIATE BETWEEN POLICE AND CDC SUPPORTERS

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – In a shocking and distressing incident in Liberia, members of the Women In Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET) were deliberately tear-gassed by police while attempting to mediate escalating tensions between law enforcement and supporters of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). The confrontation unfolded at the CDC headquarters, where clashes erupted following a controversial police raid on the party’s premises under the pretext of searching for illegal drugs.

The unrest began when police allegedly stormed the headquarters of former President George Weah’s party early in the morning, leading to a violent confrontation with CDC supporters. As the situation grew increasingly volatile, the Women of Peace, renowned for their commitment to reconciliation through prayer, stepped in to intervene. They made their way to the CDC headquarters, hoping to initiate a dialogue between the police and the party’s supporters to deescalate the situation.

Witnesses reported that the women, clad in white as a symbol of peace, were negotiating with CDC supporters to gain entry when the police attempted to use them as a shield to push through the crowd. This strategy backfired, sparking another wave of violence. In a distressing display of disregard for the women’s safety, law enforcement officers fired multiple rounds of tear gas directly at the peaceful protesters, resulting in chaos and panic.

The tear gas deployment caused significant distress among the Women of Peace, many of whom were left gasping for breath and in shock. Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion as the women struggled to protect themselves while maintaining their message of peace. Fortunately, no serious casualties were reported, but the incident underscores the severe risks faced by those advocating for non-violent resolutions in Liberia’s politically charged environment.

Despite their efforts, the Women of Peace were ultimately unable to enter the CDC headquarters, as their attempts to mediate were thwarted by the very authorities responsible for maintaining order. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among citizens, raising serious questions about police conduct and the treatment of peaceful protesters in Liberia.

In a recent interview with LNTV, a spokesperson for the Women of Peace shared insights into their vital mission of praying for peace and fostering dialogue in the nation. They expressed deep concern over the recent clashes between the police and the opposition party, which prompted them to take immediate action. Upon hearing of the unrest, the women quickly made their way to the scene, requesting permission from the police to access the CDC headquarters to facilitate a dialogue with supporters of President George Weah.

At the gates of the headquarters, the women were met with a willingness from the protesters to engage in conversation, albeit without the presence of the police. However, as discussions began, the situation escalated unexpectedly when the police deployed tear gas, creating chaos and endangering the women. The spokesperson emphasized the urgency of their mission and the need for peaceful dialogue, highlighting the resilience of the Women of Peace as they continue to advocate for harmony in Liberia amidst the turmoil.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the power and peril of non-violent action in a nation grappling with deep political divisions. The Women of Peace remain steadfast in their mission, demonstrating the strength and importance of peaceful advocacy in times of crisis.
