PRES. BOAKAI’S HANDLING OF PEARSON’S RESIGNATION: A SIGN OF WEAKNESS IN LIBERIA’S ANTI-CORRUPTION EFFORTS

Date:

MONROVIA – In Liberia, the fight against corruption seems to be losing momentum, with public officials, including President Joseph Boakai, facing criticism for their actions in key government scandals. The latest development surrounds the abrupt resignation of Madam Nyemadi D. Pearson, Deputy Governor for Operations at the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), following a damning audit report from the General Auditing Commission (GAC). The audit report exposed significant financial discrepancies and potential mismanagement within the CBL, sparking calls for impartial investigations. However, President Boakai’s acceptance of Pearson’s resignation on August 12, 2024, along with his praise of her service, has left many questioning his commitment to fighting corruption at the highest levels of government.

The GAC report detailed serious concerns regarding the financial operations at the CBL, where Pearson held a crucial leadership position. With millions of dollars potentially mismanaged or unaccounted for, the report has put the spotlight on the leadership team of the CBL, raising questions about how such irregularities were allowed to occur under their watch. Pearson’s decision to resign just as these findings came to light has intensified public scrutiny, with many wondering whether her resignation is an attempt to sidestep accountability rather than face the consequences of her actions.

Critics argue that if Pearson had no involvement in the financial irregularities, she would have remained in her position to help address the issues and clear her name. Instead, her resignation could be seen as a strategic move to distance herself from the controversy, which only adds to the suspicions of wrongdoing. For many observers, this resignation, coupled with President Boakai’s reaction, sends a message that key officials can evade accountability by stepping down quietly rather than confronting the charges leveled against them.

Adding to the controversy, President Boakai’s response to Pearson’s resignation has been notably different from his actions toward other implicated officials. While Boakai suspended Executive Governor J. Aloysius Tarlue in the wake of the GAC report, no such action was taken against Pearson. This inconsistency has led political commentators to accuse the President of playing favorites and protecting Pearson from further scrutiny. The decision to suspend Tarlue was announced by Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah, who emphasized that the suspension was a direct response to the GAC’s findings and a commitment to transparency. However, Boakai’s failure to apply the same standard to Pearson has undermined this narrative of accountability.

In her resignation letter, Madam Pearson expressed gratitude to President Boakai for the opportunity to serve as Deputy Governor of the CBL. Boakai, in turn, thanked Pearson for her years of service, a gesture that has been viewed by many as an inappropriate response given the gravity of the allegations. The President’s apparent reluctance to hold Pearson accountable has led some to speculate that her resignation is part of a larger political maneuver aimed at protecting her from embarrassment and shielding key allies from public scrutiny.

The timing of Pearson’s resignation raises further concerns, especially given the political climate in Liberia. Some analysts argue that reshuffling leadership at critical institutions like the CBL may be part of a broader effort to consolidate power and ensure loyalty within key sectors. By allowing Pearson to step down quietly, Boakai may be creating opportunities for new appointees who align more closely with his administration’s political interests.

One of the most vocal critics of Pearson’s resignation is Anderson D. Miamen, Executive Director of the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL). Miamen has raised critical questions about why Pearson was allowed to resign without facing suspension or investigation, especially given the severity of the GAC’s findings. “Resignation in the middle of a damaging audit report that could be traced to her and other individuals?” Miamen asked, underscoring the need for impartiality in the investigation process. He went on to demand that the audit and potential prosecution be conducted transparently, to ensure that true accountability is achieved.

The perception that certain officials are being shielded from the consequences of their actions is not new in Liberia, but this latest incident has struck a nerve among many citizens. For decades, Liberia has struggled with corruption at all levels of government, and the public’s trust in the country’s institutions has been eroded by repeated scandals and a lack of consequences for those in power. The Boakai administration’s handling of Pearson’s resignation threatens to reinforce the belief that corruption remains deeply entrenched in Liberia’s political system.

As the saga unfolds, the government faces increasing pressure to demonstrate that no individual, regardless of their political connections, is above the law. If the administration fails to conduct a thorough investigation into the GAC’s findings and hold those responsible accountable, it risks further damaging its credibility and weakening Liberia’s anti-corruption efforts.

In the coming weeks, all eyes will be on how the government addresses the findings of the GAC audit. Will President Boakai take meaningful steps to ensure that those implicated, including Pearson, face proper investigation and potential legal action? Or will this be yet another instance where powerful figures evade justice, leaving Liberia’s fight against corruption to falter once again? The outcome of this scandal could have lasting implications for Liberia’s political landscape and its future governance.
