SUPREME COURT HALTS LEGISLATIVE DISPUTE, ORDERS RETURN TO STATUS QUO ANTE

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Supreme Court of Liberia has issued a writ directing members of the House of Representatives, specifically those aligned with the so-called “Anti-Speaker Bloc,” to halt all proceedings and revert to the status quo ante. This decision comes in response to a petition challenging the constitutionality of certain legislative actions.

The writ, signed by Cllr. San Ma, Clerk of the Supreme Court, further mandates the Minister of Justice and the referenced legislators to appear before the Full Bench of the Court on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. at the Temple of Justice. They are required to file their official returns before this date.

Brigadier General Amos B. Kesseh Dickson, Sr., Marshal of the Supreme Court, has been tasked with serving the notice to all relevant parties.

The directive, issued under the authority of Chief Justice Her Honor Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh and Associate Justices Jamesetta H. Wolokolie, Yussif D. Kaba, Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, Sr., and Ceaneh D. Clinton-Johnson, explicitly orders all involved legislators to refrain from further actions that could influence the dispute until the matter is resolved.

The case, which has captured public attention, raises questions about legislative authority and constitutional compliance. The Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the significance of ensuring that disputes within the Legislature are addressed within the framework of the rule of law.

A conference with all parties is scheduled for November 26, during which the constitutionality of the legislators’ actions will be argued before the Court’s Full Bench.

Further updates on this developing story will follow as the legal proceedings unfold.
