UL PRESIDENT CONDEMNS VANDALISM BY STUDENTS, VOWS ACTION

Date:

MONROVIA – The President of the University of Liberia (UL), Prof. Dr. Layli Maparyan, has strongly condemned the destructive behavior exhibited by members of the campus-based Students Unification Party (SUP) at the Liberia Football Association (LFA) on March 29, 2025. Speaking on behalf of the University administration, Dr. Maparyan emphasized the damaging impact of such actions on both the institution’s reputation and its ability to fulfill its educational mission.

Dr. Maparyan expressed her frustration with the situation, especially since it unfolded while she was engaged in a peaceful and productive meeting with members of SUP at the university’s Capitol Hill campus. During the meeting, Dr. Maparyan had discussed the importance of reducing violence associated with protests and how such disruptive behavior hinders the university’s efforts to provide quality education. “While that situation was unfolding at the LFA, I was literally having my first sit-down meeting with members of SUP,” she remarked, referring to the irony of the situation.

The UL President made it clear that such actions by students outside the university campus undermine the institution’s credibility. She noted that every instance of misbehavior tarnishes the university’s image and makes it harder to provide the quality education that students expect and deserve.

Regarding the actions of the Liberia National Police (LNP) in addressing the vandalism at the LFA, Dr. Maparyan affirmed the LNP’s jurisdiction and expressed full support for the police in bringing those responsible to justice. She also emphasized the importance of adhering to the university’s internal policies. “If any of our own campus rules are violated, I am prepared to take action,” Dr. Maparyan said, outlining the possible consequences of such behavior, including warnings, suspensions, or expulsions.

Dr. Maparyan assured that the university would conduct a thorough investigation before any disciplinary actions are taken, ensuring due process is followed. “Right now, it’s a verbal warning that we’re taking these matters seriously,” she said, reminding students that the university’s policies must be followed, regardless of whether students have reviewed the student handbook.
