U.S. WARNS LIBERIANS AGAINST CLAIMING VICTORY IN THE ABSENCE OF OFFICIAL RESULTS FROM NEC

Date:

MONROVIA – As counting of votes continue in Liberia’s presidential and legislative elections, the government of the United States of America through its embassy near Monrovia, has warned Liberians to refrain from claiming victory in the absence of announcement of official election results by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

The U.S. Embassy, in a statement released to the press today, noted that it is aware that multiple candidates and political parties are claiming victory prior to the announcement of official results from the NEC.

For its part, the Embassy states that despite claims by any party or candidate,  like other international partners, it would remain awaiting the announcement of official results from the NEC before judging the outcome of the 10 October polls, adding that it encourages Liberians to patiently do the same.

“We continue to urge all citizens, political parties, and political aspirants to await official results calmly, patiently, and peacefully,” the U.S. Embassy pleaded in its statement.

“We note the joint post-election press statement from the ECOWAS and African Union election observation missions and agree that “media, political parties, and candidates [should] avoid the temptation to call the elections results ahead of NEC’s declaration,” the U.S. Embassy pointed out in its statement.

The Embassy then reiterated the U.S. government and people’s congratulations to Liberians for their participation in last Tuesday’s presidential and legislative elections.

It also commends the people of Liberia in their dedication displayed in exercising their right to vote and engage in the country’s electoral process.
