LIBERIA: NEC RELEASES 2023 ELECTIONS FINAL RESULTS TODAY

Date:

MONROVIA – The National Elections Commission (NEC), is poised to on today, announce final results from the country’s just-ended general elections, with the Commission extending an invitation to members of the press, stakeholders, actors, and observers to attend today’s results announcement ceremony, which will be done at a press conference.

At a press confab last weekend, NEC chairperson Davidetta Browne-Lansanah disclosed that the final national results for the presidential, senatorial and representative outcomes of the 10 October 2023 elections will be announced by 4:30 pm on today Tuesday, 24 October, at the Commission’s Headquarters located at Sinkor, between 9th and 10th Streets.

Results from the re-run election recently conducted in Nimba County’s 4th electoral District, will also be announced today by the electoral body, according to Browne-Lansanah.

To date, the NEC has released nearly 100’% of the 10 October elections results and has already declared some winners of seats in the House of Representatives and the Liberian Senate from the legislative election.

As per results announced so far by the electoral body, incumbent President George Weah slightly leads Joseph N. Boakai of the main opposition Unity Party, in the presidential contest.

The Commission’s Progressive Tallied Report from 5,888 of 5,890 Polling Places, accounting for 99.97%, states that Candidate Weah has garnered 803,956 votes, amounting to 43.84%, while his rival Boakai has received 796,513, representing 43.43%.

Pundits are predicting a presidential runoff between Weah and Boakai, with the pundits arguing that with almost all of the results already announced and the race between the two main contenders so close, it’s most likely neither Weah, who currently leads with a margin of 7,443 votes, nor his closest rival Boakai, can obtain the constitutionally required absolute majority to win on the first ballot.
