LIBERIA: SEVERAL INJURED AT UNITY PARTY HEADQUARTERS

Date:

MONROVIA – Smart News Liberia has gathered that an unknown vehicle with no license plate ran into a jubilating crowd at the Unity Party’s headquarters on Broad Street which led to the injuries of many people.

The crowd, mainly partisans and supporters of UP gathered last evening gathered to celebrate their presidential victory over the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) in the just-ended runoff presidential election.

According to eyewitness accounts, a black vehicle with no lights ran into the crowd at high speed leaving many injured. The eyewitnesses said there could possibly be deaths among those who were hit by the vehicle.

One of the eyewitnesses told our reporter who rush on scene that he believed the act was executed on purpose. He accused Monrovia City Mayor, Jefferson T. Koijee of ordering the hit.

On Monday, the UP presidential candidate, Amb. Joseph N. Boakai was declared the winner of the presidential runoff election by the National Election Commission.

It can be recalled, on Friday, the defeated incumbent President, George Weah conceded defeat to the main opposition leader Joseph Boakai.

President Weah, in a nationwide address said, “I stand before you tonight with a grateful heart but with the utmost respect for the democratic process that has defined our nation. As your President and the leader of the Coalition for Democratic Change, I want to address you on the outcome of the run-off elections held on November 14, 2023.”

He said the results announced, indicate that Ambassador Joseph N. Boakai is in a lead that CDC cannot surpass. Therefore, a few minutes ago, I spoke with President-elect Joseph N. Boakai to congratulate him on his victory.

“We acknowledge the results, let us also recognize that the true winners of these elections are the people of Liberia. Through the peaceful and orderly exercise of your constitutional right to vote, you have once again demonstrated your commitment to the democratic principles that bind us together as a nation,” the President said. More details will follow on the UP’s incident in our next publication
