SPEAKER FONATI KOFFA VOWS TO TACKLE ISSUE OF ESTABLISHING WAR CRIMES COURT IN LIBERIA

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – In a recent post-election statement, the newly elected Speaker of the 55th Legislature, Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa has pledged to tackle the pressing issue of establishing a War Crimes Court in Liberia. As reported by Lyndon Ponnie, Sr., the editor of the Concord Times, this matter has been a highly contentious and debated topic in the country.

Cllr. Koffa expressed his strong commitment to collaborate with the Boakai administration in formulating an agenda that prioritizes the interests of the Liberian people. It is a well-known fact that some individuals who have been implicated in committing heinous crimes during the civil war still hold positions of power within the government.

Seeking resolution for long-standing issues, Speaker Koffa emphasized the importance of carrying over unfinished business from the previous legislature, particularly regarding the establishment of war and economic crime divisions. He also emphasized the need to listen to the people’s concerns and engage in a dialogue with the President, to find common ground on this critical issue.

The potential establishment of a War Crimes Court holds great significance for Liberia, as it aims to address the atrocities committed during the civil war, seek justice for victims, and hold accountable those responsible for war crimes and other grave offenses. With Speaker Koffa’s commitment and determination, there is hope that progress will be made toward bringing closure to this dark chapter in Liberia’s history and fostering a brighter future for the nation.
