FINANCE MINISTER BOIMA KAMARA RESIGNS DUE TO HEALTH ISSUES; OFFERED CENTRAL BANK ROLE

MONROVIA – Boima Kamara, the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, has reportedly stepped down from his position, citing health concerns. Although the Executive Mansion has not yet confirmed the resignation, sources have observed Kamara clearing out his office on Monday, July 8, 2024.

Insiders reveal that President Joseph Boakai, dissatisfied with Kamara’s performance owing to his health problems, requested his resignation last week. Despite Kamara informing the President that his health had improved and he was capable of continuing his duties, the President remains concerned about Kamara’s effectiveness due to his frequent absences.

Kamara, in his second term as Minister of Finance for just six months, has faced challenges in meeting the demands of the role. Reports indicate that he has been offered a senior position at the Central Bank of Liberia, possibly as a non-executive governor. It is uncertain if Kamara will accept this role, considering his previous experience at the bank.

President Boakai is deliberating between two potential successors: his financial advisor, Molley Kamara, and former Minister Augustine Ngafuan. However, senior officials of the Unity Party are worried that Ngafuan’s political ambitions might make him unsuitable for the position.

As of now, the Executive Mansion has not issued an official statement, leaving the situation in flux.
