POLICE OFFICER TALAWALLY DISMISSED FOR UNJUSTIFIED SHOOTING LEADING TO TEEN’S DEATH

Date:

MONROVIA  – The Liberia National Police (LNP), under the leadership of Inspector General Gregory Coleman, has dismissed police officer Ismeal Talawally for the unjustified shooting and subsequent death of James Kandy. The incident occurred on July 1, 2024, in the ELWA community.

During a press conference held on Thursday, July 11, 2024, Inspector General Coleman presented the findings of the investigation, stressing the LNP’s commitment to maintaining professional standards. The investigation concluded that Officer Talawally’s use of his firearm was unjustified, leading to his dismissal from the force. He has been referred to the Criminal Investigation Division and will face legal proceedings.

The tragic event unfolded when officers of the Police Support Unit (PSU) of the LNP, acting on the orders of businessman Mawolo Jallah, went to the Rehab community outside Monrovia to arrest two individuals following a heated exchange. The suspects were found in a nearby ghetto, and the PSU officers were there to execute the arrest. Eyewitnesses recounted that after detaining the suspects, the PSU officers attempted to place them in Jallah’s vehicle. Friends of the suspects objected, insisting that the suspects should not be transported in the complainant’s car. This led to a verbal altercation, during which the PSU officers began shooting. A bullet struck fifteen-year-old James Kandy, causing him to fall instantly. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Inspector General Coleman emphasized that the LNP is dedicated to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability within its ranks. The decision to dismiss Officer Talawally and subject him to legal action reflects the police force’s commitment to justice and professional conduct.
