GUAR CRITICIZES UP GOV’T OVER ALLEGED WOLOGISI SALE TO FOREIGNERS, ADVOCATES FOR LIBERIAN INVESTORS

Date:

MONROVIA – In an appalling development, the Unity Party (UP) faces severe criticism for allegedly planning to mortgage Wologisi Mountain in Lofa County. Reports indicate the party intended to trade this invaluable natural resource for 285 pieces of earth-moving equipment, sparking widespread outrage over perceived threats to Liberia’s environmental and economic interests.

Wologisi Mountain holds immense ecological and economic significance. Its preservation is vital for maintaining biodiversity and ensuring sustainable development. The potential exploitation of this natural landmark has alarmed environmentalists and citizens dedicated to protecting Liberia’s heritage.

The UP’s alleged plan seems driven by a desire to showcase development capabilities. However, the potential loss of such a critical resource has kindled fierce public backlash, questioning the logic of prioritizing short-term gains over long-term sustainability.

Prominent Liberian social justice advocate and writer Grace RK Guar expressed disappointment in the UP’s actions on Friday, July 19, 2024. She emphasized that the mountain should have been sold to Liberian investors, specifically Richelieu Dennis, a successful entrepreneur, rather than to foreign interests. Guar believes this approach would encourage diaspora investment, fostering social and economic growth.

Richelieu Dennis, known for ventures like Sundial Brands and Essence Ventures, embodies a vision of empowering local investors. Guar argues that involving Liberians in national development aligns with national interests and builds local capacity.

There are allegations that a junior cabinet minister might be central to these negotiations, with reports suggesting involvement from a South African billionaire. This raises concerns about the deal’s integrity and motives, demanding thorough investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.

The backlash from Liberians has been swift and strong. Citizens, fiercely protective of their resources, demand explanations from the UP. This outcry underscores the urgent need for responsible governance and environmental preservation.

As the controversy unfolds, Madam Guar called for a comprehensive inquiry into the proposed deal. She stated, “They seek assurances that political leaders will prioritize the nation’s long-term welfare over personal or political gain. The preservation of Wologisi Mountain is a test of the UP’s commitment to sustainable development.”

Finally, Madam Guar stressed that the Unity Party must navigate this crisis with care. She remarked that decisions made now will have lasting implications for Liberia’s future. “By prioritizing transparency and sustainable management, the nation can ensure a prosperous future for all its citizens,” she concluded.
