SUGAR LAND, TEXAS – In a solemn ceremony marked by deep reverence and heartfelt tributes, Liberians gathered to honor the life and service of the late Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Honorable Sylvester Mondubue Grigsby. The funeral service took place on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Faith Methodist Church, 4600 FM 359 Road, Richmond, Texas, following a period of quiet remembrances at Sugar Land Mortuary, 1818 Eldridge Road, Sugar Land, Texas.

Grigsby, a trusted confidant of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., passed away on August 9, 2025, in the United States, where he had traveled for a scheduled medical checkup. His sudden death has sent waves of mourning across Liberia and within the diaspora, leaving many citizens grappling with grief and uncertainty about the future of key government initiatives.

The funeral ceremony was attended by a cross-section of Liberian political and civic leaders, including Justice Minister Oswald Tweh and Alternative National Congress (ANC) Political Leader Alexander B. Cummings. Tributes were delivered by Joseph Boakai Jr. on behalf of his father, President Boakai, as well as by ANC leader Cummings. Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf also paid homage through a representative.

During the service, the Government of Liberia honored Grigsby’s legacy with the reading of the Official Gazette by Acting Foreign Minister Deweh Gray. In addition, the Executive Mansion posted a moving tribute on its official Facebook page, stating: “Forever in our hearts. Honorable Sylvester M. Grigsby will be remembered not only for his service to country, but also for the kindness, humility, and dedication he carried throughout his life. His legacy lives on. Thank you for your service to Liberia.”

Grigsby’s career was marked by a steadfast commitment to public service and governance reform. Known for his pivotal role in the Boakai administration’s reform agenda, he was instrumental in shaping policies aimed at strengthening governance and improving Liberia’s political and economic landscape. His sudden passing is widely viewed as a significant loss, with implications for the stability and direction of the administration in the months ahead.

Colleagues and compatriots alike described Grigsby as a man of integrity, humility, and dedication, whose work ethic and vision left an indelible mark on Liberia’s public service. As Liberia mourns one of its most esteemed statesmen, the legacy of Honorable Sylvester Grigsby continues to inspire both current and future generations committed to national development and civic duty.

The ceremony concluded with final prayers and the laying of Grigsby to rest, bringing closure to a chapter in Liberian public life while reaffirming the enduring impact of his life and service.
