LIBERIA: CDC CONDEMNS FIRE AT WEAH’S RESIDENCE, DEMANDS INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION

MONROVIA – The opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has strongly condemned the recent fire at the residence of its Political Leader and former President George Manneh Weah, describing the incident as a premeditated attack intended to threaten his safety and destabilize national peace.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, and signed by National Chairman Atty. Janga A. Kowo, the CDC highlighted past incidents where former President Weah faced hostility upon returning to Liberia. The statement recalled violent confrontations at Roberts International Airport (RIA) during Weah’s previous returns, where personnel of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) reportedly clashed with CDC supporters. Kowo said similar tensions occurred during Weah’s most recent entry, with armed police officers stationed at the airport and several partisans allegedly manhandled, handcuffed, or detained.

The CDC also accused the Unity Party (UP) of spreading disinformation, including circulating a fake AI-generated image purportedly showing Weah’s bedroom. The coalition described these acts as deceptive attempts to mislead the public and tarnish the former president’s image.

The press release assured Liberians that former President Weah is safe, well, and in good health. However, the CDC called for a forensic, international, and independent investigation into the fire, emphasizing the need for transparency, truth, and justice.

The statement concluded by reiterating the CDC’s commitment to protecting Liberia’s peace, unity, and democratic principles, while cautioning against reckless actions and urging all actors to respect human life and the rule of law.
