MONROVIA – Liberian authorities arrested a 53-year-old Sierra Leonean driver, Mohammed Kormah, on Friday, September 26, 2025, after discovering 59 compressed plates of marijuana in his vehicle.
Kormah, who operates a commercial transport route between Bo, Sierra Leone, and Duala, Liberia, was intercepted by law enforcement around 1:30 PM while crossing into Liberian territory.
Officials said Kormah was the sole occupant of the Sierra Leone-registered vehicle, plate number ATV-477, which was also carrying suitcases containing his personal belongings.
The discovery of the narcotics came during a routine vehicle inspection by Liberian authorities, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking along cross-border routes in the region.
Authorities have taken Kormah into custody, and he is currently under investigation. Officials have not disclosed the intended destination of the marijuana or the parties involved in the alleged trafficking operation.
“This arrest underscores our commitment to enforcing national laws and combating illicit drug trade,” a spokesperson for the Liberian authorities said.
The case adds to growing concerns about the use of commercial transport routes for smuggling narcotics across West African borders. Law enforcement agencies in Liberia have increasingly intensified checkpoints and inspections in collaboration with regional partners.
Kormah’s arrest comes amid broader regional initiatives to curb the trafficking of illegal substances, which threaten public health and security.
