LIBERIA – Following the successful conclusion of the 4th Emmet A. Dennis National Scientific Conference at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has intensified its public health assessment efforts. Over the weekend, NPHIL Director-General Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan and his team traveled to Margibi and Bong Counties to participate in the Mpox Intra-Action Review (IAR), a nationwide exercise aimed at evaluating Liberia’s response to the Mpox outbreak.
Dr. Nyan, one of Liberia’s leading scientists, highlighted the importance of the review in a post on his official Facebook page. “Here in Margibi and Bong Counties at the Mpox Intra-Action Review (IAR) taking place around the country. “A critical assessment of the nation’s Mpox response, strengths, challenges, exchange of experience, and protected solutions,” he wrote, adding the hashtags #StopMpox, #IAR, and #PublicHealthSafety.
The IAR is designed to examine the country’s preparedness and response strategies, identifying strengths and weaknesses while fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing among health stakeholders. The process is seen as critical to strengthening the nation’s ability to prevent and contain future outbreaks.
This latest engagement follows a high-level meeting held on Thursday, September 26, 2025, between NPHIL and a delegation from the World Bank’s Washington, D.C., and Liberia offices. The meeting, chaired by Dr. Nyan, reviewed progress on the Health Security Project and explored strategies to reinforce Liberia’s health system.
Discussions focused on tackling key challenges in implementing the project and aligning practical recommendations for stronger results. The Health Security Project seeks to enhance Liberia’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to diseases and other public health threats.
The World Bank-NPHIL engagement emphasized the importance of strong partnerships between national institutions and international stakeholders in sustaining health security initiatives. Both the Mpox Intra-Action Review and the Health Security Project highlight NPHIL’s commitment to building a resilient public health system capable of addressing current and future threats.
