LACC SUMMONS NICOL OFFICIALS OVER ALLEGED FINANCIAL MALPRACTICE

MONROVIA – The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has summoned top officials from the National Insurance Company of Liberia (NICOL) amid allegations of financial malpractice. The officials, including Chief Financial Officer Dweh Thomas Bedell, Account Clerk Prince T. Freeman, and Comptroller Charlotte Y. D. Kpanah, failed to submit key financial documents requested by the Commission within a two-week deadline.

Following repeated noncompliance, the LACC took formal steps to secure their cooperation, emphasizing that the measures are part of standard investigative procedures. “The invitation and subsequent actions are designed to give the officials the opportunity to clarify their roles and provide information essential to the investigation,” a statement from the Commission said.

The inquiry forms part of LACC’s broader mandate to prevent and prosecute corruption, particularly in public institutions and state-affiliated enterprises. Observers note that the outcome could have significant implications for governance and financial accountability within Liberia’s insurance sector.

Officials at NICOL have not publicly responded, raising questions about the institution’s internal compliance and record-keeping. The LACC has reiterated that all summoned individuals will have the opportunity to present evidence and explanations in line with due process.

The officials are expected to appear at the Commission’s headquarters later this week to provide testimony and produce the requested documents, as Liberia’s public and civil society groups continue to call for stricter oversight and transparency in financial management.
