MONROVIA — The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has sharply condemned what it describes as escalating state-led intimidation and partisan abuse of power under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai. In a press statement released on December 7, 2025, CDC National Chairman Atty. Janga A. Kowo accused the Liberian National Police of targeting the party’s new headquarters in Plumkor, Sinkor, and orchestrating a series of politically motivated disruptions. The party said armed officers barricaded the construction site on December 6, 2025, in a move that the CDC characterized as state terror disguised as law enforcement.
The CDC statement described the police actions as part of a persistent pattern of aggression against the party, citing previous incidents where officers allegedly looted and demolished CDC facilities under the pretense of legal processes that later proved to be misapplied. According to the statement, such operations are not isolated errors but calculated provocations designed to intimidate the opposition and erode public confidence in governance under the Boakai administration.
A key target of the CDC’s criticism was Inspector General Gregory Coleman, whom the party accused of transforming the Liberian National Police into a partisan instrument of the ruling Unity Party. The CDC claimed that during the recent Unity Party Homecoming, police allowed party-affiliated celebrations to proceed freely while strictly restricting CDC activities, demonstrating what the opposition describes as selective enforcement of the law.
“The same police force that facilitates Unity Party celebrations becomes hostile when the CDC seeks to engage in civic expression,” the statement read. “This selective enforcement exposes a high command that has abandoned its oath of neutrality and now shields the ruling party.” The CDC warned that such practices threaten public trust and could destabilize the nation.
The party also criticized government officials appointed by the Unity Party, alleging widespread disregard for ethical standards and the national Code of Conduct. The CDC highlighted the open flaunting of partisan behavior during official hours, with officials allegedly using public offices as platforms for political display, undermining the integrity of governance and the impartiality of state institutions.
The Executive Mansion also came under fire from the CDC, which accused the administration of converting the presidency into a propaganda instrument for the ruling party. The statement cited the broadcasting of Unity Party events through official government channels as an example of the misuse of state authority for partisan advantage. “When the highest symbol of state authority becomes a megaphone for one political faction, democracy is not merely weakened, it is threatened,” the statement said.
Despite the alleged provocations, the CDC affirmed its commitment to restraint and peaceful engagement. The party claimed that its discipline has been misinterpreted as weakness, but emphasized that its commitment to democracy and civic responsibility remains steadfast. “We have given President Boakai the opportunity to govern, even as he weaponizes state institutions against us,” the statement said.
The CDC expressed confidence in the resilience of the Liberian people and warned that attempts at intimidation will not succeed. The party asserted that every effort to silence citizens has instead strengthened their resolve and revived the revolutionary spirit that has historically defended the republic against tyranny.
Chairman Kowo made clear that defending peace does not equate to submission. The CDC pledged to stand firm against what it describes as creeping authoritarianism, stating that it will act to protect democracy and civic freedoms. “If defending democracy demands resistance, then let our names be etched alongside those who refused to betray this republic,” the statement read.
In closing, the CDC vowed unwavering commitment to defending the republic. The party declared that the future of Liberia will not be surrendered to fear, intimidation, or tyranny, emphasizing that its members and supporters remain prepared to safeguard freedom and democratic governance.
