ACTING DEPUTY CHIEF CLERK’S POOR READING SKILLS SPARK CRITICISM IN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

CAPITOL HILL, MONROVIA – An embarrassing moment unfolded at the House of Representatives on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, when Acting Deputy Chief Clerk Beyan Sali struggled to read a communication during session, prompting reactions from lawmakers and sparking widespread attention on social media.

During the session, Representative Yekeh Kolubah suggested that Sali rehearse properly before reading documents in official proceedings, highlighting concerns over preparedness and professionalism in the House. The incident was captured on video and quickly circulated online, particularly on Facebook, where it attracted public scrutiny and commentary.

Anderson Miamen, a social justice advocate weighed in on the viral clip, criticizing the deputy chief clerk’s performance. “Once a person has adequate capacity, mere reading of a communication, letter for that matter, should not be an issue, even if received on a short notice,” Miamen wrote.

Miamen emphasized that the difficulties displayed in the video reflected a broader issue of capacity rather than timing. “As shown in this video, the poor reading and performance of the deputy chief clerk of the House of Representatives is more of a capacity issue than receiving the document on a short notice,” he said, stressing the importance of competence in key positions.

The advocate further argued for merit-based recruitment and informed decision-making in government appointments. “This is why we keep pushing for merit-based recruitment and informed decision-making on crucial matters. Get the right people in key positions and they will deliver at any time, with minimum or no defects in performance,” Miamen added.

Lawmakers and the public have expressed concern that such incidents could undermine the efficiency and credibility of parliamentary proceedings. Many have called for stronger measures to ensure that administrative staff in legislative institutions meet the required professional standards.

The video’s circulation online has intensified discussions about capacity building and accountability within Liberia’s legislative body, with citizens demanding higher standards for officials handling critical communications and documentation.
