MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Liberian activist and political commentator Grace RK Guar has called for an end to political hostility among Liberians, urging citizens to embrace tolerance and constructive dialogue. In a statement on Saturday, February 8, 2025, Guar expressed concern over the increasing division caused by political affiliations, warning that such animosity is detrimental to Liberia’s already fragile society.
Reflecting on her experiences, Guar noted how Liberians have turned into enemies simply because of their support for different political leaders and parties. She described this growing division as a result of poor communication and a lack of respect for differing opinions.
“I find it disheartening to witness how we have become enemies simply for supporting different political parties and candidates,” Guar stated. “This division, fueled by a lack of proper communication, is detrimental to our fragile and decaying society.”
She stressed that disagreeing with a political leader does not equate to hatred, but rather reflects differing views on their vision, leadership style, and suitability for office. Guar pointed out that political discourse in Liberia is often accompanied by lies, bullying, and hostility, which further deepens divisions and prevents constructive debate.
“When we express our reasons for not supporting a particular candidate or political leader, it should not be construed as hatred,” she said. “Our disagreement stems from a lack of belief in their vision, agenda, or plans for the country, which may be based on their work ethic, leadership within their party, or personality.”
Instead of resorting to insults, Guar urged Liberians to focus on promoting the positive attributes of their preferred leaders. She emphasized that genuine political engagement should involve defending candidates based on their honesty, integrity, courage, and contributions to national development.
“Bullying and preaching hate against those who express differing opinions will not benefit your candidate in any election,” Guar cautioned. “History has shown that such tactics have not yielded positive results, and they are unlikely to do so in the future.”
She highlighted the importance of fostering a national identity that transcends partisan politics, stating that true love for Liberia should be reflected in actions that promote unity rather than division. Guar argued that those who engage in hate speech and political bullying are not driven by patriotism but by blind loyalty to individual politicians.
“If you truly love Liberia, you will refrain from engaging in behavior that brings division and hostility among our people,” she said. “Love for our country should manifest in our actions and words, promoting unity and understanding rather than conflict and animosity.”
She further urged Liberians to embrace respectful dialogue, even in disagreement, and to prioritize national interest over personal or party loyalty. Guar emphasized that the country’s progress depends on its citizens’ ability to engage in constructive debate and recognize the value of diverse perspectives.
“We should be champions for constructive debate and advocates for the values we believe in, rather than attacking others for their beliefs,” she stated.
As Liberia continues to pilot political and economic challenges, Guar’s message serves as a call for reflection and a reminder that the country’s development should not be sacrificed at the altar of political divisions. She concluded her statement with a passionate appeal for unity.
“If we genuinely care about Liberia’s future, we must prioritize the well-being of our nation over blind loyalty to individuals or parties,” she said. “We need to work together, celebrate our diversity of thought, and uplift one another in pursuit of a brighter future for all Liberians. Liberia forever!”
