AFL MARKS 68TH ARMED FORCES DAY WITH PARADE AND HIGH HONORS

Date:

MONROVIA – The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) marked its 68th Armed Forces Day with a series of ceremonies highlighting the military’s role in national security and peacekeeping. The celebration, held under the theme “Sustaining Peace and Security through Stakeholder’s Engagement: The Role of the Armed Forces of Liberia,” brought together dignitaries, national security agencies, and foreign military partners.

The day’s events commenced at 6:00 a.m. on February 11, 2025, with the hoisting of the Liberian flag, followed by the arrival of the press and invited guests. The official parade took place at the Barclay Training Center Parade Ground, where President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Commander-in-Chief of the AFL, delivered his Armed Forces Day message and reviewed the troops. President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, who served as the Guest Speaker, joined other dignitaries, including members of the Legislature, the Diplomatic Corps, and senior security officials.

National security institutions participated in the parade, including the Liberia National Police, Liberia Immigration Service, Liberia National Fire Service, Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency, Monrovia and Paynesville City Police, and the Liberia Seaport Police. The AFL Marching Band led the troops through the principal streets of Monrovia, adding to the pageantry of the celebration.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) Medals to individuals recognized for their dedication and service to the AFL. Honorees included President Julius Maada Bio, Lieutenant General Daniel Ishmael Opande of the Kenyan Armed Forces, Brigadier General Aaron Johnson (Ret.) of the AFL, Colonel Anthony F. Norpah (Ret.) of the AFL, and General Ravarga V. Wagh of the Michigan National Guard. Also honored were Lieutenant Colonel Dieudonne Tevoedjre Djimon and Lieutenant Colonel Andre Dokoui-Fofo of the Republic of Benin Armed Forces, alongside Counselor Francis Johnson Allison and Sister Mary-Lauren Browne for their service to Liberia.

The celebration concluded with the Armed Forces Day Ball at the Executive Pavilion in Monrovia. President Boakai and First Lady Kartumu Yarta Boakai led the grand march, joined by the Minister of National Defense and the AFL Chief of Staff. The evening featured traditional toasts, the cutting of the Armed Forces Day cake, and performances by the AFL Musical Band.

The Armed Forces of Liberia expressed gratitude to the president, the Liberian people, and international partners for their support in making the event a success, reaffirming its commitment to national defense and security.
