BILITY CONDEMNS HOUSE POWER STRUGGLE, CALLS FOR RESPECT FOR RULE OF LAW

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Representative Musa Hassan Bility, Chairman of the Rule of Law Caucus, has strongly condemned what he calls a blatant violation of House rules, the Liberian Constitution, and a Supreme Court mandate by members of the so-called majority bloc in the House of Representatives.

In a statement issued on February 4, 2025, Bility accused certain lawmakers of unlawfully appointing new committee members in violation of House procedures, which require a two-thirds majority, at least 49 members—to dissolve a committee. He maintained that these actions have effectively nullified committees previously constituted by Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, whom he insisted remains the legitimate Speaker of the 55th Legislature.

Bility described the move as an unconstitutional and illegal attempt to destabilize the House, hijack the legislative process, and obstruct accountability. He warned that those behind these maneuvers are deliberately sowing division to cripple governance and shield corruption. According to him, the unlawful takeover of legislative committees is designed to block audits, prevent oversight of public finances, and weaken democratic institutions.

The Rule of Law Caucus rejected the newly formed committees and reaffirmed that only those constituted by Speaker Koffa have legal standing. It called on the government to restore order and urged the international community to intervene to protect Liberia’s democracy. Bility further appealed to Liberians to resist what he termed a dangerous political maneuver that threatens good governance.

The Rule of Law Caucus vowed to continue its fight for democracy, transparency, and accountability. Bility warned that any leadership change must follow due process, adding that the caucus will not stand by while the rule of law is undermined.
