BOAKAI DECLARES JANUARY 1, 2026 A NATIONAL HOLIDAY, CALLS FOR NATIONWIDE PRAYERS

EXECUTIVE MANSION, MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has by Proclamation declared Thursday, January 1, 2026, as “New Year’s Day,” to be observed throughout the Republic of Liberia as a National Holiday.

According to the proclamation, the President has called on all citizens and foreign nationals residing within Liberia to observe the day in keeping with national tradition. The proclamation further urges members of the Sacerdotal Order, including prelates, priests, deacons, evangelists, imams, and other religious leaders, to lead worship activities across the country.

President Boakai’s proclamation encourages Liberians to gather in their respective places of worship for the common purpose of seeking God’s continued kindness, mercy, and generosity toward all nations of the world, with particular focus on Liberia and its people.

The document reiterates that the first day of January each year is officially designated as “New Year’s Day” and recognized as a national holiday under the Patriotic Cultural Observance Law, Title 25 of the Liberian Code of Laws of 1956.

“This day affords many citizens and residents of Liberia the opportunity to celebrate the infinite goodness and mercy of the Almighty who has blessed and prospered the work of the minds, hearts and hands of all the people of Liberia during the previous year,” the proclamation stated.

New Year’s Day is traditionally marked across Liberia with religious services, family gatherings, and reflections on national unity, peace, and progress as the country ushers in a new calendar year.
