MONROVIA – In the wake of the controversy surrounding the Assets Recovery Team, which led to the resignation of the political leadership of the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL) and activist Martin Kollie’s letter exposing alleged corruption within the team, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to assets recovery. Speaking at the second day of the government’s first cabinet retreat, held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, Monrovia, Boakai emphasized that the process of assets recovery in his government is unstoppable.
“The process of retrieving government assets will be conducted in strict accordance with the laws of our country,” Boakai stated, underscoring his administration’s dedication to transparency and accountability across all sectors. He assured the public that his government is committed to working in the interest of the people, ensuring that governance is conducted differently and more effectively.
Cllr. Edwin Kla Martin, the chair of the Assets Recovery and Retrieval Task Force, also addressed the retreat, highlighting the progress made since the task force began its work. Martin reported that they have made significant interventions in various communities, achieving a 50% success rate in some areas. He promised that in the coming days and weeks, the task force will make their findings public, including details on punitive measures for violators.
“We have been working covertly in some communities and have made massive progress,” Martin informed the gathering. He expressed regret that some government officials leave their positions without accounting for assets, emphasizing the need for accountability to deter such behavior in the future.
The efforts by Boakai’s administration to ensure transparency and accountability through the assets recovery initiative reflect a broader commitment to reform and good governance. The retreat aims to review the administration’s first 100-day performance, introduce a new national development plan, and promote cohesion and coordination within the government.
While the administration focuses on these high-level goals, the success of these initiatives will ultimately be judged by their tangible impact on the lives of ordinary Liberians. As the Unity Party government navigates these challenges, the nation watches closely to see if these commitments will lead to real, lasting change.
