BOAKAI URGES CALM AS LIBERIA MOVES TO DEFUSE BORDER TENSIONS WITH GUINEA

MONROVIA – Joseph Nyuma Boakai has delivered a national address aimed at reassuring Liberians that his administration is firmly in control of the developing situation along the Liberia–Guinea border, emphasizing diplomacy, restraint, and regional cooperation as the path forward.

Speaking from the Executive Mansion on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, President Boakai acknowledged growing public concern over recent developments in the Sorlumba area of Foyah District, Lofa County. He described the situation as sensitive but assured citizens that the government is “fully engaged and is responsibly managing the situation with calm and determination.”

The President stressed that from the onset of the tension, Liberia opted for peaceful engagement rather than confrontation. “From the very outset, the Government of Liberia took immediate steps to de-escalate the situation by addressing it through peaceful and diplomatic means,” Boakai said, noting that direct communication channels with Guinea had already been activated.

He further highlighted the role of regional diplomacy, revealing that Liberia has been working closely with Sierra Leone under the framework of the Mano River Union to ensure that dialogue remains central to resolving the dispute. According to him, this collaboration has reinforced a shared commitment among the three nations to maintain peace along their borders.

A major breakthrough, Boakai disclosed, is Guinea’s decision to order its forces to return to their previous positions. He described this move as “an important step toward de-escalation,” signaling what he called a mutual understanding that stability must guide all actions in the region.

Despite this progress, the Liberian leader emphasized that national security remains a top priority. He assured the public that the Armed Forces of Liberia, along with the Liberia National Police and other joint security agencies, are maintaining vigilance while supporting ongoing diplomatic efforts.

President Boakai also acknowledged the support of regional and international partners, including Economic Community of West African States and the African Union, who have called for restraint and peaceful engagement. He noted that such solidarity strengthens Liberia’s resolve to pursue dialogue over conflict.

In a firm message to the nation, Boakai underscored that choosing peace should not be mistaken for weakness. “Our pursuit of a peaceful resolution is not a sign of weakness, but rather a demonstration of strength,” he declared, adding that while conflict may be easy to ignite, rebuilding after destruction is far more difficult.

Reflecting on Liberia’s history, the President reminded citizens of the country’s longstanding commitment to peaceful coexistence with its neighbors. He pointed out that shared cultural, economic, and familial ties among border communities must be protected, not endangered by conflict.

At the same time, Boakai issued a strong appeal for national unity and responsible public conduct. He urged Liberians, particularly those in border areas, to remain calm and law-abiding, warning against the spread of rumors and unverified information that could escalate tensions.

Concluding his address, President Boakai reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Liberia’s peace, describing it as a hard-earned achievement born out of years of sacrifice and reconciliation. “That peace is precious, and this government will do everything within its power to protect and preserve it,” he said, calling on citizens to remain united and confident as the situation continues to unfold.
