CDC CONDEMNS UNITY PARTY GOV’T FOR POLITICAL WITCH-HUNT, CALLS ON LIBERIANS TO DEFEND DEMOCRACY

MONROVIA – The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) on Thursday, November 7, 2025, issued a strong condemnation of the Unity Party (UP)-led government under President Joseph Boakai, accusing it of orchestrating political witch-hunts and diverting public attention from its failures in governance. In an official statement, the CDC recalled the November 7, 2021, attack on its National Headquarters, describing it as a stark reminder of the “tyrannical” tactics historically employed by the UP to intimidate political opponents.

The CDC’s National Chairman, Atty. Janga A. Kowo, denounced the recent legal actions targeting prominent former CDC officials, including Nora Finda Bundoo, John S. Youboty, and Madam Thelman Duncan Sawyer, widow of the late former Interim President Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer. Kowo described the allegations against these individuals as “bogus” and warned that the party would mount both legal and political resistance to what it perceives as a targeted attack on its leadership.

“The concocted allegations would never withstand legal scrutiny and are the makings of a dysfunctional Asset Recovery system,” Kowo asserted, urging all CDC members to unite behind their former officials. He added that the party will not allow selective prosecution or abuse of the courts to intimidate opposition voices.

The CDC statement also highlighted what it described as glaring financial mismanagement by the Boakai administration. Kowo criticized a recent allocation of over US$6.5 million for a December 6 program, calling it an extravagant expenditure that raises questions about the government’s priorities. “It is apparent that this financial maneuver is less about public welfare and more about exploiting the resources of our nation for personal gains,” Kowo stated.

Beyond isolated incidents, the CDC accused the UP government of systemic failures, including rising costs of goods and services, declining economic growth from 4.7 percent in 2023 to 4 percent in 2024, and the continued mismanagement of public resources. The party also cited President Boakai’s costly international travels to Paris and the Middle East with a large entourage as evidence of irresponsible use of taxpayer money, contrasting sharply with the economic hardships faced by ordinary Liberians.

Kowo further criticized the UP administration for failing to implement campaign promises, particularly in education, including harmonization policies, free tuition, and free WASSE programs. According to the CDC, the government has failed to account for millions of dollars under its two-year tenure while selectively targeting former CDC officials for prosecution, leaving current officials engaged in corruption untouched.

The statement also accused the Unity Party of ignoring public procurement laws and awarding contracts and concessions in a manner described as “bogus,” citing examples such as 285 yellow machines, a US$365 million road contract, and the Oranto Oil Deal. The CDC alleged that while the government pretends to fight corruption, it has turned a blind eye to ongoing acts of graft across state institutions.

Human rights issues also came under fire in the CDC statement. The party referenced recent reports by the U.S. Department of State highlighting concerns in Liberia, including police brutality and controversial judicial outreach by the executive branch. Kowo argued that these reports underscore systemic failures and reveal that the government’s anti-corruption measures are largely a façade.

In conclusion, the CDC called on all Liberians to remain vigilant and united against what it termed “orchestrated disenfranchisement” by the UP-led government. The party urged citizens to defend democratic principles and ensure that Liberia’s resources and governance remain accountable to the people, rather than an elite few.

“Join us in the fight for true democracy and accountability,” Kowo urged, signing off the statement on behalf of the CDC. The party reiterated its commitment to resisting political repression and safeguarding the rights of all Liberians under the constitution.
