MONROVIA – On Friday, June 28, 2024, scores of committed partisans and supporters of the main opposition and former ruling party, the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), gathered to commence the official opening of its CDC Militants’ Homecoming and Reconciliation Day ceremony. Dressed in blue and white with matching berets, CDC partisans and supporters danced, sang, and chanted political slogans in remembrance of their active political days, especially at the main headquarters of the CDC in Congo Town, Monrovia.
Delivering brief remarks at the occasion was senior CDC member and Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, who stated that no successful revolution ever bypasses a counter-revolution. According to him, the Mighty Congress for Democratic Change is in a period of counter-revolution. “We must issue to our partisans the necessary caveat that during the period of the counter-revolution, unity is the most important point of the congress and of the party,” he urged. He emphasized that the strength of the CDC lies in unity, the ideologies that have brought them to this point, and the forces that have sustained them. “And so today, on the day that you have made memorable, you have stolen the show, and congratulations and thanks to all of you,” he added.
Also speaking at the occasion was senior opposition member and Nimba County District #7 Representative Musa H. Bility, Chairman of the Liberty Party (LP), who reemphasized the need for members of the opposition bloc to rally and join forces with unity to take state power in 2029. “There will be temptations, but let’s work together and come back stronger,” he maintained. Representative Bility hailed Speaker Koffa for his splendid leadership at the House of Representatives, disclosing that they have explicit and overwhelming confidence in Koffa’s leadership and that not even 25% of Representatives at the House would vote to remove him as Speaker. He warned that anyone attempting to disrupt the Legislature would be disrupting the state, adding, “If they fire one shot at the House, they will fire back at the Senate and the Executive Mansion.”
Clarifying his statement further, Representative Bility pointed out that the Liberian people made their decision in the 2023 elections for the two big parties in the country to divide the government, with one to the Executive Mansion and another to the Capitol Building. He stated that any attempt to change that means wanting to change the election outcome, and they would help to have it changed. He urged CDC militants to remain peaceful and stand up for their rights, stressing, “Let’s respect each other’s views and remain in the opposition.”
At the same time, staunch CDC member Chief Cyril Allen emphasized that the program signifies that a new Liberia has been born, referring to it as a destiny of faith occasion. He commended the committed and dedicated partisans of the CDC for a job well done and reiterated calls allegedly made by the ruling party leader to remove Speaker Koffa, referencing the Bible verse: “Touch Not My Anointed and Do My Prophet No Harm.” Chief Allen criticized President Boakai’s performance over the past six months, alleging that he has failed to deliver and has surrounded himself with unscrupulous bureaucrats of the old order. “President Boakai has surrounded himself with a bunch of unscrupulous bureaucrats of the old order,” he re-emphasized. Allen urged the Liberian leader to do the right thing, as the people are suffering and need better leadership and deliverance from his much-anticipated government.
Meanwhile, the program is expected to continue tomorrow with various political and other activities.
