CEPHAS FAMILY’S JOURNEY OF SURVIVAL REFLECTS LIBERIA’S LINGERING TRAUMA

MONROVIA – The story of the Cephas family is one of sacrifice, survival, and a relentless struggle for safety that spans decades and crosses continents. Their history is anchored in the turbulence of Liberia’s civil conflict, a period that left deep scars on families nationwide and continues to cast a long shadow over those who lived through it.

At the center of their legacy stands General Nathaniel Koon, the family’s grand uncle and a respected military figure remembered for his courage during the brutal 14-year civil war. As Liberia descended into violence, General Koon remained steadfast, fighting to protect civilians amid widespread chaos. His commitment to duty ultimately cost him his life. He died on the battlefield, a loss that marked the beginning of profound suffering for the family he left behind.

That tragedy was soon compounded by another. During the height of the war, rebels killed the mother of Charles L. Cephas Jr. Her death, the family believes, was tied to the perception that her husband, Charles L. Cephas Sr., was aligned with the government, an association that made her an easy target in a conflict where fear and suspicion governed survival. Her killing left a deep emotional wound and underscored the indiscriminate brutality that claimed countless innocent victims during the war.

By 1996, faced with escalating violence and an uncertain future, the Cephas family fled Liberia. Their escape to Ghana offered temporary refuge, but the sense of displacement lingered. Years later, in 2003, the family resettled in the United States, hoping for stability and a chance to rebuild their lives far from the devastation they had endured.

Yet even distance could not fully shield them from fear. During a recent visit to Liberia, a member of the Cephas family was attacked by unknown assailants armed with cutlasses. The attackers, according to accounts, appeared intent on harming him or possibly endangering his family. He was rushed to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital for emergency care, surviving the ordeal but leaving the country deeply shaken. The assault reaffirmed the family’s longstanding concerns about personal safety and the risks that persist for individuals with perceived political or historical affiliations.

Today, the Cephas family remains wary of returning to their homeland. The memories of past loss, combined with the fresh trauma of the recent attack, continue to fuel their fears. Their reluctance is a poignant reminder that, for many Liberian families, the war’s end did not erase the dangers or the emotional burdens carried across generations.

The Cephas family’s journey underscores the enduring impact of Liberia’s civil conflict: the sacrifices of those who fought, the innocent lives disrupted or destroyed, and the lingering insecurity that still shapes the choices of survivors. Their story stands as both a testament to resilience and a call for sustained peace, justice, and reassurance for all Liberians seeking safety and belonging in the land they call home.
