MONROVIA – The residents and leadership of Electoral District #2 in Gbarpolu County have extended profound thanks to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the Government of Liberia for fulfilling a major infrastructure promise—construction of the long-awaited Kpayaquelleh Bailey Bridge over the St. Paul River.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, May 22, 2025, and signed by Leemu Mathews, a resident and youth of the district, the community expressed appreciation for what they described as a “transformative project” that is already changing lives in one of Liberia’s historically underserved regions.
The bridge, currently under construction, was a campaign promise made during the 2023 presidential runoff election. Then-candidate Boakai, with the support of former Senate Pro Tempore Armah Zolu Jallah, assured voters in Gbarpolu and neighboring Bong County that the river crossing would be built. For years, residents have endured seasonal isolation, with floods cutting off entire communities and hampering access to education, healthcare, and trade routes.
“Today, we are proud and grateful to witness the construction of the Kpayaquelleh Bailey Bridge,” the statement read. “It will significantly improve transportation, boost regional trade, promote access to healthcare and education, and strengthen national unity.”
The community also commended Public Works Minister Roland Giddings for his role in executing the project, calling his leadership instrumental to turning the promise into action. The bridge is seen as a symbol of progress and a fulfillment of the Unity Party-led government’s pledge to prioritize rural development.
As work continues, the citizens of Gbarpolu have pledged their continued support for the Boakai administration’s development agenda and called for sustained investment in infrastructure projects that address the real needs of the people.
