MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) has officially filed a complaint with the Office of the Ombudsman, accusing senior officials of the ruling Unity Party of violating Section 5.1 of Liberia’s Code of Conduct for public officials by engaging in political campaign activities while still serving in appointed government positions.
In a strongly worded letter dated Sunday, April 13, 2025, and signed by Wilfred Nehwon Bangura II, Secretary General of CMC, the group called on the Ombudsman, Cllr. Finley Karnga, to investigate what it describes as a “blatant disregard for the law” that threatens the integrity of Liberia’s democratic process.
The complaint centers on allegations that certain Unity Party officials, who currently hold presidential appointments, participated in campaign-related activities while acting in their official capacities. According to CMC, such actions violate Section 5.1 of the Code of Conduct, which states: “All officials appointed by the President of the Republic of Liberia shall not engage in political activities, canvass, or contest for elected offices.”
“This blatant disregard for the law constitutes a breach of the Code of Conduct and threatens the sanctity of our democratic process,” the letter read. “The Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) strongly condemns this action and urges your esteemed office to investigate and take appropriate action by your mandate immediately.”
CMC emphasized that failure to address this alleged misconduct would set a dangerous precedent and undermine public confidence in Liberia’s electoral system. The group expressed faith in the Office of the Ombudsman’s ability to uphold the rule of law and ensure that public officials are held accountable, irrespective of political affiliation.
The Ombudsman has yet to respond publicly to the complaint.
