MONROVIA – The combative and controversial Director General of the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS), Mr. Eugene L. Fahngon, has issued a stern warning to his deputies, declaring he will not tolerate insubordination and disrespect within the institution. On Thursday, July 11, 2024, Fahngon posted this controversial statement on his official Facebook page, stating, “I will not tolerate insubordination and disrespect to my deputies in the name of politics…. I will act in the interest of the LBS and the state…” While Fahngon did not mention any specific deputies in his statement, his message has been heavily criticized on social media. The post has sparked debate, with many questioning the appropriateness and tone of his warning.
This recent declaration comes in the wake of another controversy involving Fahngon. On July 1, 2024, at the Free Port of Monrovia, he reportedly slapped Charles Roberts, the Chief of Security at the National Port Authority (NPA). The altercation began when Roberts confronted Fahngon for using a drone without proper authorization. According to reports, Fahngon claimed he had been invited to the port by the Managing Director, Sekou Dukuly. However, upon his arrival, Fahngon began flying a drone without prior notice or permission.
Roberts, fulfilling his duty, informed Fahngon of the port’s regulations, stating, “Fahngon, you can’t fly a drone here without permission from the management. Even if you have permission, the security should be informed.” This confrontation allegedly incited Fahngon’s anger. He retorted with, “Do you know who I am? Who are you to stop me?” Despite Roberts’ attempts to explain the rules, Fahngon reportedly slapped Roberts in the ear. The situation escalated until other security personnel intervened, calming Roberts and advising him to file an official complaint with the Managing Director or the police.
The incident quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread debate and criticism. Fahngon, known for his combative nature, has not issued a public statement regarding the alleged incident. Meanwhile, sources indicate that internal mediation efforts are underway to resolve the conflict.
Fahngon’s recent warning to his deputies and the Free Port incident highlight ongoing tensions and challenges within the LBS and broader governmental institutions. As mediation efforts continue, many are watching closely to see how these issues will be resolved and what impact they might have on the leadership and operations of the LBS.
