MONROVIA, LIBERIA – President Joseph N. Boakai has reinstated Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), officially ending her suspension. The announcement, issued in an Executive Mansion press release on February 20, 2025, was signed by Presidential Press Secretary Atty. Kula Bonah Nyei Fofana.
The decision followed a crucial meeting at the Executive Mansion on February 18, 2025, where President Boakai met with NEC Commissioners, the ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia, and senior officials from the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs. After extensive discussions, an agreement was reached to strengthen cooperation among the Commissioners and overturn dismissals of certain NEC staff members.
Emphasizing the necessity of maintaining cohesion and professionalism within the electoral body, President Boakai urged Lansanah to ensure collaboration and prevent any form of internal strife that could undermine public confidence in the NEC. He further encouraged her to cultivate a positive working relationship with staff members to enhance institutional effectiveness.
In response to ongoing grievances, the President confirmed that he would meet with representatives of the NEC’s discontented employees at a later date. This follows concerns raised in a petition presented after a demonstration in December 2024. He reassured staff members of his administration’s commitment to fostering a supportive and stable work environment.
With the matter resolved, President Boakai expressed optimism that the NEC would now focus on its core responsibilities, including the upcoming by-election in Nimba County to replace the late Senator Prince Y. Johnson. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the integrity of the NEC and safeguarding the credibility of Liberia’s electoral process.
