DEPUTY LAA BOSS RESIGNS, CITES CORRUPTION AND INTERNAL RIFT

MONROVIA – The Deputy Director for Administration of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), Helena M. Doe-Knuckles, has resigned, citing internal conflict and alleged corruption within the agency that manages the nation’s only international airport.

In a resignation letter dated Saturday, August 16, 2025, addressed to the LAA Board of Directors and copied to the Ministry of Transport, Doe-Knuckles expressed frustration over what she described as a “persistent internal impasse” and a “toxic environment where integrity is compromised and reform efforts are repeatedly obstructed.” She further alleged “deep-seated corruption” within the authority, raising new concerns about governance and accountability at Roberts International Airport (RIA).

Her departure follows months of reported tensions within the LAA’s senior management team. Allegations of financial mismanagement, questionable procurement practices, and unauthorized contract awards have reportedly fueled disputes at the agency. The situation, according to insiders, has hampered reform efforts and deepened divisions among top executives.

The resignation of Doe-Knuckles leaves a critical gap in the leadership of the LAA, which oversees operations at RIA, Liberia’s primary international gateway for travel, trade, and humanitarian aid. Analysts say her decision could further erode public confidence in the authority’s management at a time when Liberia is seeking to boost aviation safety, efficiency, and investment.

The Liberia Airport Authority has not yet issued an official response to her allegations. However, pressure is mounting on the institution’s board and the Ministry of Transport to investigate the claims and provide clarity on the way forward.
