DR. DOUGBEH CHRIS NYAN CONFIRMS 71 ACTIVE CASES, ASSURES PUBLIC OF ONGOING RESPONSE

MONROVIA – The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), through its Director General Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, has provided the latest update on the status of the Mpox outbreak in the country. The information was disclosed during a National Epidemic Preparedness and Response Committee meeting held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at NPHIL’s large conference room in Congo Town.

As of June 2, 2025, Liberia has recorded a total of 164 confirmed cases of Mpox, with 71 currently active and 93 individuals fully recovered. Notably, no deaths have been reported since the detection of the outbreak.

Dr. Nyan, a renowned infectious disease scientist, emphasized the continued vigilance and coordination of the health sector in tracking and managing the disease. He reassured the public that NPHIL and its partners remain actively engaged in surveillance, case management, and public education to prevent further spread.

The Mpox update was presented during the regular meeting of the National Epidemic Preparedness and Response Committee, which brings together public health experts, international partners, and government stakeholders to review national response efforts.

Mpox, formerly known as Monkeypox, is a viral disease that has seen periodic outbreaks across parts of Africa and beyond. Liberia’s health authorities have been working to contain its spread since the emergence of new cases in recent months.

Dr. Nyan called on the public to continue observing preventive health measures and to report any symptoms early. He further noted that the absence of fatalities so far is a testament to the effectiveness of Liberia’s clinical response and inter-agency collaboration.
