MONROVIA – Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), has emphasized the crucial role of mental health in building a strong and resilient workforce. He made the remarks on Friday, October 10, 2025, during a presentation marking World Mental Health Day at NPHIL headquarters in Congo Town, Monrovia.
The event brought together staff, employees, and members of the senior management team for a thoughtful engagement on the importance of mental health in the workplace. Madam Joyce Abel, a mental health campaigner who delivered the main lecture, underscored the need to prioritize mental well-being as an integral part of overall health. She encouraged NPHIL staff to create a supportive and understanding work environment that promotes emotional balance and stress management.
Madam Abel further urged senior management to establish a dedicated Mental Health Section within the institution. According to her, such a unit would enhance employee wellness, provide psychosocial support, and strengthen internal health promotion efforts at NPHIL.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Nyan reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to ensuring the mental well-being of its employees. “Mental health is a vital component of public health. As we continue to strengthen our systems to respond to diseases and health threats, we must also ensure that our staff are mentally resilient, motivated, and supported,” Dr. Nyan stated.
The observance at NPHIL aligned with the global theme of World Mental Health Day, which seeks to raise awareness and mobilize action in support of mental health for all.
