ELWA MEDICAL STAFF STAGE PROTEST OVER UNPAID SALARIES AND POOR WORKING CONDITIONS

MONROVIA – Doctors and nurses at ELWA Hospital have staged a protest, demanding the immediate settlement of years of unpaid salaries and benefits, while drawing national attention to what they describe as deteriorating working conditions at one of Monrovia’s key health facilities.

The aggrieved medical staff on Monday, October 6, 2025, gathered outside the hospital, chanting slogans and carrying placards to highlight their grievances. They accused hospital management of neglecting their welfare despite numerous meetings and unfulfilled promises to address their concerns.

According to the protesters, their frustrations stem from multiple issues, including long-standing salary arrears, unpaid COVID-19 risk allowances, and the hospital’s alleged failure to remit NASSCORP contributions even though regular deductions are made from their wages.

“The hospital charges plenty, but they refuse to pay us,” one protesting nurse said, capturing the mood of anger and disappointment among the workers.

The health workers also raised concerns over unsafe working conditions and the lack of essential logistics, including transportation, buses, and ambulances, which they say undermine their ability to perform their duties effectively. In addition, they pointed to persistent salary delays and growing disparities in pay among staff as further sources of frustration.

The protesting staff revealed that several engagements with hospital authorities have failed to produce concrete results. As a result, they are calling on the Government of Liberia and relevant health stakeholders to intervene swiftly to resolve the situation and restore confidence among the hospital’s workforce.

ELWA Hospital remains a major referral center in Monrovia, providing critical medical services to thousands of Liberians. However, the ongoing protest has raised fears of disruptions to healthcare delivery if the workers’ grievances are not urgently addressed.
